as his beloved Son. On this third day the evangelist has the Baptist testifying that Jesus is the beloved Son in whom the Father delights, ‘Behold the Lamb of God’. This time it is not a general statement but aimed at his own disciples. The Baptist continues to point to Jesus at the expense of his own following.
